Space of Exception

Space of Exception is a first solo presentation by Maryanto in Singapore. The exhibition is held at Yeo Workshop, Gillman Barracks Singapore over Singapore Art Week, and runs from 16 January 2015-1 March 2015.

The show consists of works on paper (ink on paper, graphite on paper, aquarelle on paper, acrylic on paper, charcoal on paper, and combinations of the above mediums on paper), mostly in black and white. With one series of studies of nature "Observations i.. - Observations xi" in colour. In addition, and as a focus, an installation consisting of a tent sits in the middle of the exhibition. Within the tent, there are spontaneously formed clay sculptures, a make-shift wood plank as bench, and some notebooks and pencils with which visitors are invited to record their "ideal utopian situations". This constructed sculpture evoking a campsite, faces a large charcoal on canvas rendering of the Merapi Volcano in Jogya karta, Indonesia.
