Intelligence New British Art 2000
'Intelligence' suggests both covert infor mation gathering and the faculty used to process information into something new. Many contemporary artists might be seen as intelligence agents at large in society, gathering, sifting and transforming the raw data of our lives, critically examining our environment, the way we live and our social relationships. This catalogue, published to accompany the major exhibition at Tate Britain, brings together the work of twenty two artists who share such an approach. These artists all view art as a means for seeing the world differently: their work asks questions and offers clues, but does not attempt to provide a complete answer. Instead, they invite viewers to use their own intelligence to investigate the art and reach their own conclusions.
Intelligence has been curated by Virginia Button and Charles Esche. In addition to an introductory essay highlighting the thinking behind the choice of works in the exhibi tion, the curators provide an illustrated text on each artist. Lively contributions by the critic and curator Ralph Rugoff and Charlie Gere of Birkbeck College, London, explore further the fundamental importance of 'intelligence' today, not only in the art world but in daily life.
Intelligence is the first in a series of exhibitions of New British Art to be held every three years at Tate Britain. The intention of the series is to provide a bold and dynamic interpretation of current work.
