A History of Art in Twentieth-Century China
This book represents the first comprehensive historical study of Chinese art to cover the beginnings of modernization in the mid-nineteenth century through the myriad periods of development and transformation of the twentieth century and beyond. The last two decades have seen the publication of a number of specialized studies focusing on specific aspects of Chinese art in the twentieth century, and covering specific periods of its history, such as the Republican era of 1912 to 1949, the 'Maoist era' of 1949 to 1976, the 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution' of 1966-76, and the post-Cultural Revolution years. By contrast, the present study encompasses the art-historical narrative of the last one-hundred-and-fifty years. Based on extensive research and drawing on a wealth of visual documentation, the book chronicles this period in a thorough and critical manner, providing readers with a comprehensive framework from which to build an understanding of Chinese art in the 20th century and into the 21st.
