Drawing A Distance: Drawing from 3 cities
DRAWING A DISTANCE: Drawings from 3 cities brings together works from three different cities separated by the South China Sea - Kuala Lumpur, Yogjakarta, and Manila. All the works on display only feature drawing techniques and 'dry' materials. The Indonesian contingent includes artists Nurrachmat Widyasena, Anton Subiyanto, and Maryanto, works from Filipino artists Epjey Pacheco, Iggy Rodriguez, and Victor Balanon are also on display, and from the host country, the artists are Haslin Ismail, Lim Keh Soon, and Saifuddin Mamat or 'Poodien', as he is better known. The nine artists' works meet and are displayed together in an intimate setting that allows audiences to appreciate and analyse the differences and the similarities among the regional offering. Artists involved worked on the premise that even though the works they produce are extensions of their own practices, they still exist in a metaphysical space in the form of a triangle, or points that connect their three cities. During the stages of production, the artists were summoned to question how their works would be perceived later. Would they be seen as 'siblings' or as 'aliens'? Would this exhibition see them occupying new territories? Will it merely be a trip to revisit old techniques and styles? Or will the exhibition just be a stopover for their long artistic journey? Either way, the exhibition called for the nine artists to start to think and to draw a distance.
