Outlet: Yogyakarta within the Contemporary Indonesia Art Scene
Conducted by Cemeti Art Foundation in the years 1997–1999, the publication is a comprehensive research into Yogyakarta’s place within the Indonesian contemporary art scene. It responds to a lack of discourse about contemporary art in Indonesia in general, while embedding it in a larger framework of Indonesian modern art. rnrn “To date, contemporary Indonesian art has generally been written about by foreign commentator, and is of course, seen through their eyes. Thus, Cemeti Art Foundation felt the need to carry out its own research using Indonesian writers, who approach the subject from their own specific angle.”(From the foreword by Raihul Fadjiri, Cemeti Art Foundation)rnrnThe four essays of the publication are written by academics originating from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at ISI (Indonesian Arts Institute) and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology):rn‘The Role of Power in Contemporary Yogyakartan Art’ by Sumartono; ‘Tradition and the Socio-Political Context in Contemporary Yogyakartan Art of the 1990’s’ by Asmudjo Jono Irianto; ‘Yogyakartan Art of the 1990’s: A Case Study in the Development of Indonesian Contemporary Art’ by Rizki A. Zaelani and ‘Yogyakartan Art: Trends Prior to the Third Millenium’ by M. Dwi Marianto.
