FROM MODERNISM TO POSTMODERNISM: An Anthology
Motivated by the assumption that students cannot appreciate philosophical postmodernism without first understanding the development of modernity, this anthology puts the contemporary philosophical debate over postmodernism in the context of the development and criticism of modernity since the 17th century. Half of the 42 selections are devoted to postmodernism in philosophy, literature and architecture, and its critics; and half to the formation and criticism of modernity from the 17th through the mid-20th centuries. Intellectual precusors of current postmodernists are systematically included. The result is a collection of writings from Descartes to Derrida. Selected authors include: Rousseau, Burke, Kant, Marx, Peirce, Baudelaire, Nietzsche, Freud, Weber, Husserl, Wittgenstein, Le Corbusier, Adorno, Heidegger, Derrida, Foucault, Hassan, Lyotard, Irigary, Rorty, Habermas and MacIntyre. An editor's introduction defines the problems raised by postmodernism, and introductory paragraphs help to contextualize each selection.rnrnCahoone's classic anthology provides an unparalleled collection of the essential readings in modernism and postmodernism. The anthology puts contemporary debate in the context of the criticism of modernity since the seventeenth century, thus allowing the reader to appreciate postmodernism by first understanding the development of modernity.Chronologically and thematically arranged, this volume's breadth and depth of coverage ensures that it will be an indispensable and multidisciplinary resource in philosophy, literature, cultural studies, social theory, and religious studies.rnrn"The most practical, coherent, and accessible way to teach postmodernism I have ever seen." William Schroeder, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignrnrn"This is the best collection of texts concerning the most recent developments in what we commonly call ‘Continental philosophy’. It allows anyone to traverse the diversity of texts that comprise the modernism–postmodernism debate. Cahoone has also written fine and very helpful introductions to each section. I do not see how anyone teaching a class in this area could use any other book than From Modernism to Postmodernism." Leonard Lawlor, University of MemphisrnrnA recommended read for anyone interested in deciphering and understanding the substratum of political thought and its movements. A handy reference at hand - makes for a quick and useful comparison btween the different authors and their periods. A handbook for the layperson and the student of social sciences.
