Voiceovers
Director's Foreword
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is very pleased to be working, once again, with Guinness Australasia in presenting the 5th Guinness Contemporary Art Project. This series of contemporary exhibitions has provided audiences in Australia with a unique insight into the latest ideas from both Australian and international artists. The Guinness series has distinguished itself as one of the most stimulating and unusual exhibition series in Australia.
This year Victoria Lynn, the Gallery's Curator for Contemporary Art, has curated "Voiceovers", an exhibition of four artists, Lin Li, Nalini Malani, Mariko Mori and Shirin Neshat. In these video installations each artist reinterprets her own specific cultural background by presenting performances on screen. Viewers are taken through encounters with the cultures of Tibet, india, Japan and Iran. The medium of video art has been with us for thirty years and this exhibition demonstrates its recent revitalisation on the international and Australian art scene.
This year Guinness Australasia has offered an art prize to undergraduate students of time-based media in tandem with the focus of "Voiceovers" on video art. (Edmund Capon, Director, Art Gallery of New South Wales)
